What do you think you will see if you had a chance to peek in the kitchens of the world's best dietitians and nutritionists? These are the people who know what to eat and what not to eat to lead a long healthy life and maintain a fit body.

While you may not be surprised to find loads of fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, and whole grains, the absence of some items may amaze you to no end. You might find the so-called 'superfoods' or 'healthy food' nowhere in their bakeware kitchens or the pantry. However, many of the same foods are widely used and consumed by our family and us.

Nutritionists and dieticians advise us on what to eat and what food items we must avoid or not mix while cooking.

Food items that should never be mixed while cooking

Ellementry and Food Safety – Two Sides of the Same Coin

One of the essential brand pillars of Ellementry is food safety, and we believe that food safety lies in safe cooking, storing and serving. So, it does not just include what ingredients you use while you cook but also your technique, using the right utensils and storage jars, and above all, cleanliness.

Keeping these things in mind, we, at Ellementry, ensure that all our products have been crafted and manufactured following the highest ethical standards and practices. Great products help in making food better, and Ellementry is all about making products that ensure food safety.

After consulting a panel of esteemed nutritionists, dietitians, and food experts, we have curated a list of food products that should not be there in the kitchen or mixed during cooking.

Food Items that Should Not Mixed While Cooking

Rice Cakes:

In many households, rice cakes have been a constant presence for ages. It is considered a staple diet by many. However, this food item is ranked relatively high in the glycemic index – which measures how quickly our blood rises in response to food items and ranks them between 1 to 100. Rice cakes are clocked at 82. Food with GI initially provides us with an energy rush and makes us feel hungry after a few hours. Rice cake, which sits relatively high in the GI, can cause excessive hunger and craving, which leads to weight gain and overeating. So, this food item must be completely banned from the kitchen.

Animal Protein and Carbs:

Mashed potatoes with sautéed chicken or grilled fish might sound lip-smacking but does more harm than good for our body when you mix carbohydrates, like bread or potatoes, with pure protein, the former ferments. Simultaneously, the latter putrefies inside our digestive system that leads to the formation of gas, flatulence, and bloating. It's best to switch over to healthier alternatives like rice and beans when eating heavy protein food items.

Cheese and meat:

Meat in fondue, meat, omelettes and cheesy meatballs are all high protein food items. While they are delicious to eat, it is quite difficult to digest these food combinations. So, instead of cooking meat with cheese, try some veggies instead. It will not only help you avoid certain health conditions but will also be quite beneficial for your overall well being.

Tomatoes in pasta:

Is your favourite pasta sauce Arrabbiata and/or Bolognese?

Then, this might come as bad news to you. Tomato and pasta is a disastrous combination that can wreak havoc on your gut health. Try to avoid the cheese and tomatoes in pasta as the acid in the tomato curdles the dairy and degrades the starchy pasta. Again, mixing carbs and meat will make another bad combination that will be very difficult to digest. So, stick to the plain and simple Aglio sauce or the pesto sauce to stay healthy.

Milk and banana:

Banana milkshake or banana smoothie is something that everyone has had at least once in their lifetime. Even while making other milkshake combinations, we frequently add bananas to make it more fulfilling. But this food combination is lethal and must be avoided.

Why? Because bananas, when mixed in milk, sit heavily in your stomach. However, if you cannot resist this combination, add some cinnamon or nutmeg into the mixture to give your digestive system a push.

Cheese and beans:

This combination is commonly found in Mexican cuisine and is a sure way of getting gas and other digestive problems. Beans, when mixed with guacamole, cheese and hot sauce, is a lethal combination for bloating. So, try to have all the ingredients separately instead of mixing them. Beans do not cause any digestive problems, but when mixed with cheese, it can ruin your gut health.

Fruits and Yogurt:

Yoghurts are probiotic, which means that they contain millions of bacteria that will instantly start acting on the sugar present in fruits. Bacteria and sugar result in allergies, colds, and the formation of toxins. To remedy this situation, you can mix raisins, honey, or cinnamon instead of fruits in unflavored yoghurt that has been kept at room temperature.

Cereal mixed milk accompanied with Orange Juice:

A bowl of cereal mixed with milk and a glass of orange juice to accompany it- a typical breakfast for many households in the morning. However, this combination is lethal. Let's see how:

Orange juice contains acid and milk has casein in it. When mixed, the acid in orange curdles the dairy and destroys the starchy cereal making it impossible for our digestive system to retain any nutrients from this meal. So, you should drink the juice at least an hour after having milk and cereal.

Care tips while mixing food items

These are some of the food items that must not be mixed while cooking and avoided at any cost to lead a healthy and toxic-free life. Food safety makes sure that you and your family stay safe and it is not just limited to cooking and food combinations, but also what kind of utensils and storage items you use in the kitchen. As we said before, food safety is one of the pillars upon which Ellementry has been built. So, we ensure that all our products are manufactured with materials that are safe for physical contact with food items.

We hope this article helps you in practising food safety. If you know any more such food combinations that are bad for health, let us know in the comments below. Stay safe, eat healthy.
